The 2026 Ballon d'Or award will be presented less than a day from now at the London Palladium. Three names dominate the conversation: Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe, and England striker Harry Kane. The ceremony will determine who claims football's most prestigious individual honor for the 2025-26 season.

Data models and betting markets offer conflicting predictions. Avisia, a French artificial intelligence firm, lists Yamal as the favorite with a 23 percent probability. Kane follows at 21 percent, while Mbappe sits at 19 percent, tied with 2024 winner Rodri. Messi holds the fifth spot at 18 percent. Bookmakers place Kane as the outright favorite with a 70 percent chance. Avisia noted it correctly predicted the top five finishers for the previous year's award, which Ousmane Dembele won.

Peers and former pros have weighed in on the race. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports Lionel Messi, citing his performance at age 38. Simeone stated, "After the World Cup, he played at his age… No doubt about it." Marco Materazzi agreed, describing Messi as being "in a different league." Jude Bellingham backs Kane, calling him "very honest and hard-working." Anthony Gordon supports Yamal, while Aurelien Tchouameni praises Mbappe's season.

The statistical cases vary by player. Mbappe led La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15. He also scored 12 goals at the World Cup, a tournament record, and won the Golden Boot. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Messi's 82 in 2011-12. Yamal's personal numbers were lower due to injury, but he secured major team success.

Silverware provides a key differentiator. Mbappe did not win a major trophy with club or country. Kane won the Bundesliga but finished third at the World Cup. Yamal won both the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Historical trends favor players with major tournament success, as only four of the last 19 winners lacked a Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America title in their winning year.

If Yamal wins the prize, he will become the youngest recipient in the award's history. The current record is held by Brazil's Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997. Yamal is 19. The winner will be announced during the ceremony at the London Palladium later today.
