Mike Boynton has signed a two-year contract to become the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. He succeeds Dusty May, who departed for the NBA to take the head coaching position with the Dallas Mavericks after the team won the national championship. The hiring resolves the interim status Boynton held following May's exit and places a familiar face in charge of the title defense.
Boynton previously spent seven seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma State. His record there stands at 119 wins and 109 losses, with one appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Cowboys parted ways with him after a 12-20 season in 2023-24. Since then, he has served as an assistant coach on May's staff at Michigan for the last two seasons.
The coaching transition at Michigan represents the most prominent shift in the current offseason landscape. Other major programs have also made substantial changes to their rosters of staff. These moves reflect a pattern of turnover across major conferences as programs seek new leadership.
Kansas State fired Jerome Tang, who compiled a 26-10 record in his first year but finished 45-47 over his next three seasons. The school hired Casey Alexander to replace him. Alexander has a career record of 303-180, having previously coached at Stetson, Lipscomb, and Belmont.
LSU has brought back Will Wade for a second stint at the helm. Wade had been fired in 2022 following an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations. He was succeeded by Matt McMahon, who was dismissed after a 60-70 record over four years. Wade led McNeese and N.C. State to NCAA Tournament appearances during his time away from the SEC school.
North Carolina hired Michael Malone, a former NBA head coach, to lead its basketball program. Malone had no prior connection to the Tar Heels and no previous experience as a college head coach. He goes into the role with a 510-394 record in the NBA, including a championship with the Denver Nuggets in 2023. He replaces Hubert Davis, who coached the team for five years and reached the 2022 national championship game.
N.C. State has named Justin Gainey as its first-time head coach. Gainey previously served as an assistant under Rick Barnes at Tennessee and at several other programs. He replaces Will Wade, who went 20-14 in his sole season at the Wolfpack before moving to LSU.
Syracuse has hired Gerry McNamara to return to the program where he holds career records for three-point baskets and minutes played. McNamara most recently coached Siena, leading them to a 23-12 record and an NCAA Tournament berth. He replaces Adrian Autry, who was fired after three seasons with a 49-48 record and no tournament appearances.
On the women's side, Pauline Love has returned to Alabama as head coach. She had served as an assistant for Kristy Curry during the 2024-25 season before Curry moved to South Florida. Love spent the previous season as an assistant at Oklahoma. Other notable women's hires include Tammi Reiss at South Carolina, Ayla Guzzardo at Georgia, Carla Berube at Northwestern, Aaron Rousell at Virginia, and new leadership at Georgetown, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.
