Bristol Bears have confirmed the signing of 21-year-old Samoan forward Totoa Auvaa. The move follows Auvaa's dismissal from Saracens earlier in the season after he became involved in a second altercation in a nightclub within six months.

Auvaa's time at Saracens ended abruptly after an incident in St Albans involving England cricketers Gus Atkinson and Ben Stokes in June. That incident contributed to Stokes' decision to retire from international cricket. The Bears now offer the back-rower a new contract as he enters the 2026/27 season.

Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam, a former Samoa captain, stated that he believes he can guide his fellow countryman toward success. Lam noted that Auvaa possesses exciting physical attributes and significant potential despite his recent difficulties.

"Totoa is a big, physical young man with enormous potential, who unfortunately has made some mistakes since arriving from a small village in Samoa to the massive city of London," Lam said. He added that Auvaa's agent contacted him to see if the Bears would provide a second chance. Lam emphasized his belief that young people deserve the opportunity to learn from their experiences and grow.

"Having spent time with Totoa, I feel confident that we can provide him with the mentorship, guidance, support and structure to give him the best possible opportunity to succeed," Lam continued. He said the club aims to help Auvaa become a valued member of the team and a person his family in Samoa can be proud of.

Auvaa has previously captained Samoa at U20 and 'A' levels. His professional record includes two red cards for violent conduct while on loan at Ampthill in the Championship last season. Both dismissals occurred in matches against Hartpury. In the first incident, he punched an opposition player in the face after a try. In the second, in March, he kicked a player in the head during a ruck.

The Bears have officially welcomed Auvaa to the squad. He will train with the team as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
