Iamaleava Stays: UCLA Faces QB Cost Decision as Dieffenbach Thrives
The Bruins' 7-0 record hinges on a transfer quarterback who is outperforming expectations, forcing a complex roster and financial calculus for head coach Bob Chesney.

Nico Iamaleava has informed UCLA he intends to return for the 2027 season, a decision that forces the Bruins to manage two high-cost quarterbacks with one year of eligibility each. His agent confirmed to CBS Sports on Wednesday that the 6-foot-5 prospect plans to remain on campus to complete his recovery from a torn ACL.
The injury occurred on October 10 during a win at Oregon. Iamaleava was off to a steady but unremarkable start under new head coach Bob Chesney before the injury ended his 2026 campaign. Had he entered the 2027 NFL Draft, the knee injury would have complicated the standard pre-draft process. By staying, he avoids rushing his rehab and can use the Big Ten medical infrastructure to prove he is fully recovered to professional evaluators.
His return creates a direct competition for the starting job with Ty Dieffenbach. Dieffenbach, a transfer from Cal Poly, has started every game since the injury. He has led the 7-0 Bruins to victories over Wisconsin and Michigan State. In the win over Oregon, he threw a critical fourth-quarter touchdown pass.
Dieffenbach is listed as a senior but retains one year of eligibility under the NCAA's five-for-five model. As an FCS transfer, he has provided starter-level competence at a lower financial cost than Iamaleava. One coach told Aaron Taylor of CBS Sports that Dieffenbach can make some throws better than Iamaleava did.
The Bruins must now balance NIL commitments. Iamaleava is a No. 2-ranked prospect from the Class of 2023 who was expected to enter the NFL earlier. His draft stock wavered, leading him to return for his final year. Keeping both players requires the program to support two players at Power Four starter-level wages. This is a significant financial commitment for a program that has just entered the top tier of the sport.
The situation is further complicated by the presence of Madden Iamaleava, Nico's younger brother, on the roster. Dieffenbach beat out Madden for the backup role this season. If Dieffenbach continues his strong play through the remainder of the 2026 schedule, he may position himself to beat out Nico for the 2027 starting job.
The necessity of a quality backup was evident this season. Oregon struggled after losing Dante Moore to injury. Ohio State is preparing to throw true freshman Luke Fahey into the starting role after an injury to Julian Sayin. UCLA's depth chart reflects this reality, with two experienced options ready to step in if needed.
The Bruins prepare for a game against Nevada on Saturday. Dieffenbach is currently the starter. Iamaleava is recovering and has indicated he will be back. The program must determine how much value to place on retaining an experienced backup against the cost of keeping two high-profile quarterbacks on the roster.
