The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions.
Milwaukee defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field. The win ended a 44 year title drought for the franchise. It was the first championship in the team's 58 seasons of play.
Jacob Misiorowski started the game and threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits before leaving due to a right calf cramp. The crowd gave him a standing ovation. He opened with 12 consecutive four-seamers. His fastball reached 103 mph twice during the outing. He finished with 58 strikes on 86 pitches. He recorded two strikeouts. He was 2-0 with a 0.84 ERA in the series.
Cooper Pratt drove in two runs and recorded two hits. He set a series rookie record by getting six consecutive hits. Jackson Chourio set a five-game series record with 11 hits. The Brewers scored three runs on home runs. The teams combined for four total home runs in the game.
The 1982 team lost Game 7 after blowing a 3-1 lead. That group included five Hall of Famers. Manager Pat Murphy led this team. He survived a heart attack in 2020. He won the National League Manager of the Year award in 2024 and 2025. His team finished the regular season with 103 wins. They went 11-2 in the postseason. They swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
Tampa Bay fell behind 3-0 in the series. Only 21 of 26 teams in that situation were swept. Tampa Bay became the fifth to lose in Game 5. The Rays have now lost their first three World Series appearances. Their only other losses came in 2008 and 2020.
Trevor Megill closed the game. He allowed an RBI double to Chandler Simpson with two outs in the ninth. He retired Richie Palacios on a grounder to end the game. He threw his arms in the air as teammates mobbed him near the mound.
The Brewers ranked 19th in payroll as of Aug. 31. The Rays ranked 25th. This was the first series since 1991 between teams in the bottom half of payrolls. Owners are pushing for a salary cap. A management lockout is likely to start Dec. 2. It could threaten the 2027 season.
