Investors in Anthropic are positioned for substantial financial gains as the AI laboratory prepares for a public listing expected to value the firm at up to $2 trillion this year. Even before the initial public offering, the stakes held by prominent venture capital firms and individual backers have already accumulated into billions of dollars based on the company's most recent private valuation of $965 billion.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, represents one of the earliest entries into the company's capital structure. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt participated in the Series A round in 2021 when Anthropic was valued at just $461 million. His current holding of approximately 1% of the company translates to a stake worth nearly $10 billion at present private market prices.
Later-stage institutional investors have also seen their positions appreciate significantly. Iconiq Capital committed $6 billion to the company last year, entering when the valuation stood at $183 billion. That substantial investment is now valued at $17 billion, with analysts suggesting it could double upon the completion of the IPO. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D financing, has deployed over $1 billion into the AI lab over time. Their accumulated stake is currently appraised at $14 billion.
Sequoia Capital made its initial investment in Anthropic earlier this year, joining after the company’s valuation had already reached $380 billion. By committing $3 billion, the firm secured roughly 1% ownership. This entry point has already resulted in a return that more than doubles the original capital deployed, reflecting the rapid appreciation in the company's worth.
Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, entered the market in 2023 during the Series C round with a $35 million investment. Since then, the firm has injected an additional $400 million into the company, resulting in a stake now valued in the billions. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to establish a separate venture capital entity.
Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, made a $75 million investment in the same 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since expanded more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion. These figures illustrate the dramatic wealth creation occurring among Anthropic’s backers ahead of its anticipated market debut.
