Jaylen Watson is out for the rest of the season. The Los Angeles Rams confirmed on Wednesday that the cornerback will miss the remainder of the campaign due to a shoulder injury. The news lands at a difficult time for the team, which has dealt with a string of secondary issues this year.

Watson had been gaining momentum before the injury struck. Defensive coordinator Chris Shula noted on Thursday that the player was just starting to find his rhythm. Shula described Watson as a connector in the defensive back room who brought people together and asked sharp questions during meetings. The coach called the absence a big loss that requires the remaining players to step up. Shula added that Watson’s attention to film and positional details will remain valuable even though he cannot play on the field.

The Rams face a crowded injury report as they prepare for their next game. Cornerback Trent McDuffie did not participate in the media viewing period of Thursday’s practice, marking his second consecutive absence. He is dealing with a back ailment. Safety Kam Curl was also absent for the second straight session. With Watson, McDuffie, and Curl all nursing injuries, the defensive backfield could look very different in the coming weeks.

The team will rely heavily on Emmanuel Forbes Jr. and Josh Wallace in the upcoming contest against the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Tight end Colby Parkinson missed his second practice this week with a rib injury. The offensive line and skill positions are seeing some positive movement, however. Defensive end Myles Garrett and tight end Terrence Ferguson both returned to practice on Wednesday. They were active participants again on Thursday as they gear up to return from injured reserve.

Defensive lineman Aaron Donald expressed confidence in the group despite the setbacks. The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year said the team has playmakers who are executing well. Donald noted that losing one good player simply means another trusted player steps in. He said the drop-off for the next man up should not be too large. The veteran added that it feels good to have players in the back end whom the defense can trust.

Offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase welcomed the return of Ferguson with enthusiasm. The Rams utilize a lot of 13 personnel, which requires multiple eligible receivers. Scheelhaase stated that having more of those players available improves the team. He expressed confidence in the versatility and career elements Ferguson brings. The coach also noted that he has been encouraged by the players who have stepped in during Ferguson’s absence.

The Rams will look to balance their defensive depth against their offensive gains in the coming days. Watson’s role as a leader will continue in a different capacity as he guides his peers. The team remains focused on managing its current roster while key pieces return to full activity.
