Patrick Henry flag football coach Alona Harper’s emphasis on defensive play paid off Tuesday night. The Patriots recorded four interceptions, including one for a touchdown, to defeat O’Farrell Charter 21-6 in the San Diego Section Division III semifinals. The victory advances Patrick Henry to the division championship game scheduled for Saturday at Olympian High School in Chula Vista.
Harper told players repeatedly during the season that defense wins championships. She noted that the unit stayed composed even when the offense struggled. Harper stated that the defense was the shining part of the entire team.
The Patriots entered the season without five starters due to injuries. Starting quarterback Olive Murillo tore her ACL early in the season opener. The coaching staff moved players from the junior varsity team into the starting lineup. Harper said the team had to make adjustments they were not prepared for but the players battled back. The squad finished sixth in the Western League with a 3-9 record.
Lexi Raymond moved into the starting quarterback position. She rushed for 1,000 yards at 10 yards per carry and threw for 13 touchdowns during the regular season. Against O’Farrell, Raymond ran for 150 yards. Her total included a 73-yard touchdown run. Harper has coached Raymond since eighth grade and noted that the athlete is willing to fill any role on the field.
Raymond connected with junior Michelle Ng for 40 yards on three catches. Freshman Vivian Nett added four receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown. Nett is the only freshman on the varsity roster. She joined the team from junior varsity late in the season. Harper said Nett has scored six touchdowns in the playoffs.
Four different Patriots players recorded interceptions against O’Farrell. Tayte Miller, Kiara Torralba, Daniella Munoz, and Vivian Nett each took one. Miller returned his interception 12 yards for a touchdown to cap the scoring. Harper described the group as super motivated and locked in. She added that the players are preparing mentally, physically, and emotionally for the final.
Torrey Pines and Helix flag football teams also advanced to the championship games at Olympian High School on Saturday.
