Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay announced on Friday that defensive end Myles Garrett will be activated from injured reserve to face the Washington Commanders. The move concludes a seven-game absence for the two-time Defensive Player of the Year.
Garrett underwent arthroscopic knee surgery following the team's opening week loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He had experienced discomfort during training camp, but the season-opening game revealed how the injury affected his agility and explosiveness.
The Rams enter Sunday's game with a 4-4 record. McVay indicated the team is still finalizing Garrett's role in the starting lineup. The coach said the defensive end has progressed well in practice and feels comfortable with the game plan. McVay noted that Garrett made a strong impact in sessions on Wednesday and Thursday.
McVay said the team aims to implement its full defensive vision with Garrett alongside three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald. However, the coach acknowledged the depth chart remains thin. Cornerback Jaylen Watson and defensive tackle Poona Ford are on season-ending injured reserve lists. Linebacker Kobie Turner is still recovering from a groin strain.
McVay expressed satisfaction with the unit's work this week. He stated that bringing Garrett back into the mix with other front seven players has been exciting. The coach said the group has to bring that chemistry to life during the game.
The Rams will also activate tight end Terrance Ferguson and running back Ronnie Rivers from injured reserve for the matchup against the 2-4-1 Commanders. Ferguson has an ankle injury, while Rivers has a calf issue.
Several other players are listed as questionable for Sunday. Linebacker Grant Stuard, receiver Jordan Whittington, cornerback Trent McDuffie, tight end Colby Parkinson, and safety Kam Curl are all uncertain to play. McDuffie missed all practice this week with a back injury. Long snapper Joe Cardona is doubtful to play due to an ankle problem.
