Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers is averaging 38.3 points per game, a league-leading total that has established him as the primary offensive engine for his team through the first two weeks of the 2026-27 season.

Doncic’s scoring surge has come with wins, as the Lakers maintain a 6-2 record. His efficiency includes splits of 49.7% from the field, 42.7% from three-point range, and 88.7% from the free-throw line. After scoring 42 points against the Miami Heat, teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo suggested that Doncic may be positioning himself as the best scorer in the history of the game.

The Philadelphia 76ers match the Lakers in overall success with a 7-1 record, though their dynamic is centered on Tyrese Maxey. The 25-year-old leads the NBA in fourth-quarter scoring with an average of 11.0 points in that stretch. Coach Nick Nurse noted that Maxey now appears to recognize his own quality in a humble manner, a shift from previous seasons.

Houston also sits at 7-1, a performance attributed largely to the return of Fred VanVleet. VanVleet missed the start of the previous season due to a knee injury, but his presence has organized the Rockets' offense. The team currently holds the league's best offensive rating at 121.2. Marcus Smart provides additional guard depth, allowing VanVleet to rest during back-to-back games.

Injuries have disrupted the rosters of top-tier teams in the West. The Oklahoma City Thunder have lost four All-Defensive players, including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. This absence has reduced their effectiveness in transition, with the team averaging only 11.8 points off turnovers in the past four games. By contrast, Oklahoma City led the league in this metric during each of the previous three seasons.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are navigating the absence of Anthony Edwards, who underwent knee surgery and is expected to miss two months. Ayo Dosunmu, a five-year, $112 million signing this summer, has stepped into the starting role. The team remains at 5-3, having secured victories over the Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks while suffering losses to the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs.

The Memphis Grizzlies, at 6-1, are relying on young talent after trading away Ja Morant in June. Players such as Cameron Boozer, Cedric Coward, and Ty Jerome are carrying the load. General Manager Zach Kleiman previously described the roster rebuild as a quick process rather than a long-term project, a strategy that appears to be yielding early results.

The Golden State Warriors have found stability through Yaxel Lendeborg, the No. 11 pick in the June draft. Lendeborg has scored 26, 26, 31, and 37 points in his first two weeks. His performance includes a game where he hit six three-pointers while Stephen Curry and Draymond Green rested. Coach Steve Kerr stated that Lendeborg’s arrival has changed the team's dynamic.
