Families looking for a holiday movie option on Christmas Day will find a new adventure from Sony Pictures. The studio released a fresh trailer for Jumanji: Open World, the latest entry in the series. The film opens on December 25, 2026.
The release date places the movie in a crowded market. Mid-December features Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three. The Jumanji sequel arrives the following week. Jake Kasdan directs the project. He previously directed Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019.
Kasdan also reshaped the franchise with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017. That film converted the original board game concept into a vintage video game. It earned more than $960 million worldwide. The 2019 follow-up, The Next Level, achieved similar box office results.
The new trailer teases a twist that references the 1995 original. It also promises the series' standard body-swapping chaos. The official synopsis labels Open World the hilarious final installment of the trilogy. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan return to their roles.
The plot sees the game break free of its console. The chaos now unfolds in the real world rather than the digital jungles of previous films. A mystery from the previous film remains unresolved. Rory McCann played the villain Jurgen the Brutal in 2019. Johnson revealed that character was the avatar of an unknown real-world player.
Development on a third film paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. Work resumed in 2024. The 2019 film included a mid-credits scene where Lamorne Morris plays a heater repairman. He visits the home of Spencer Gilpin, played by Alex Wolff. Morris notices the broken console and accidentally starts the game again.
