Florida Governor-elect Byron Donalds identified high fuel prices as the primary driver behind the Republican Party's losses on Tuesday. Speaking on Fox & Friends on Wednesday, Donalds stated that voter anger over gas and diesel costs reached a breaking point. He noted that these frustrations boiled over, contributing to the Democratic gains in Congress and state leadership races.
The midterm elections resulted in Democrats regaining control of both the House and the Senate. The party also flipped governor's seats in Texas, Georgia, and Ohio. Donalds, a Trump-backed congressman, argued that these results reflect a specific dissatisfaction with the first two years of President Donald Trump's second term.
Beyond energy costs, Donalds pointed to legislative failures in the U.S. Senate. He cited the inability to pass a Save America Act and codify key border security packages from the President's agenda into law. Donalds said these missed opportunities created frustration among Republican voters, leading many to either stay home or support Democratic candidates. He plans to address these issues with colleagues during the upcoming lame duck session in Washington.
Donalds credited his own victory in Florida to a comprehensive ground game. His campaign reported knocking on more than 2.2 million doors. The campaign focused its messaging on three core issues: insurance costs, housing affordability, and education quality for children. Donalds highlighted the support he received from voters in the Panhandle, stating that their turnout helped maintain Florida as a conservative state.
The governor-elect pledged to make Florida more affordable and to ensure children can achieve their potential. He described his win as a decisive result after a tough fight. Donalds emphasized that his administration would focus on practical governance rather than political talking points. He expressed gratitude to voters across the state for their support.
Donalds made history with this election. He became the first Black politician to win a gubernatorial election in Florida. He is also the first Black Republican in the nation's history to be elected governor. The three-term representative from Southwest Florida defeated his Democratic rival, former Rep. David Jolly. Trump endorsed Donalds in February of last year, prior to the formal launch of his gubernatorial campaign.
