Chris Brown avoided prison Monday for a 2023 attack at a London nightclub, receiving a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to affray. The 37-year-old R&B star was sentenced in Southwark Crown Court to eight months in custody, a term suspended for one year.
The incident occurred in February 2023 on the dance floor of Tape, a private club in the Mayfair district. Brown struck Abraham Diaw, a music producer and former friend, twice in the head with a tequila bottle. Video footage played in court showed Brown being pulled away from the victim after the assault.
Judge Tony Baumgartner noted the use of a glass bottle aimed at the head was plainly dangerous and carried a risk of serious injury. Despite the severity, the judge ruled that Brown did not qualify for a custodial sentence because he pleaded guilty and had mitigating factors such as stable employment and charity work. The judge acknowledged Brown's previous convictions but observed he had maintained a clean record in recent years.
Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe stated that Brown played a leading role in the attack, noting that he moved first. Defense lawyer Sallie Bennett-Jenkins argued the attack lasted no more than 20 seconds. She said Brown offered a profound apology to everyone present at the club that night. Diaw was discharged from the hospital with head and knee injuries.
Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray. Akinlolu received a four-month suspended sentence. In exchange for Brown's guilty plea, prosecutors dropped charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and having an offensive weapon.
The sentencing follows the cancellation of a scheduled October 17 performance at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, along with other U.S. dates. Organizers cited the health and well-being of the touring company. The tour is set to resume November 5 in Atlanta. Brown had been on bail of 5 million pounds, which allowed him to tour Europe and North America over the past two summers.
Fans from Italy and the Netherlands gathered outside the courthouse to cheer Brown. He wore a black mask, dark glasses, and a black leather jacket while moving through the crowd. He blew a kiss to one fan and signed an autograph for another. A lone voice outside the court asked when he would learn that violence is not okay.
Brown left the United Kingdom after the brawl but was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel following a concert. He rose to fame in 2005 and won Grammys for best R&B album in 2011 for his album F.A.M.E. and in 2025 for 11:11 (Deluxe).
