Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won a fourth non-consecutive term as Brazilian president on Sunday. He defeated right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in the presidential run-off. The victory has already triggered a wave of international reactions from leaders across the political spectrum.

Bolsonaro has formally asked for the vote to be annulled. His primary objection is a two-hour extension of voting hours ordered by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin. The senator labeled the move "unacceptable." Both candidates had originally requested additional time to vote.

Leftist leaders abroad reacted quickly to the result. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum posted on X that the people of Brazil won. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel called the win "historic." He said it ensures the continuity of peace, sovereignty, and social justice. He added that Cuba stands ready to build unity in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Regional heads of state emphasized cooperation. Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast phoned Lula to congratulate him. He said the two nations would continue working on economic integration and fighting organized crime. Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz described the two countries as sisters with shared challenges. He promised to work toward new opportunities for both nations. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino congratulated the Brazilian people on a "democratic day."

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney credited Lula with advancing relations between the two countries. He urged both sides to strengthen ties, create commercial prospects, and protect the environment. He said these steps would ensure greater prosperity for their populations.

Reactions in the United States split along party lines. Donald Trump Jr. criticized the outcome and pointed to the extended voting time. He claimed that if a conservative government had made the same change, the mainstream press would have lost its minds. He suggested the press is silent because it supports the cause. Senator Bernie Sanders called the win an "extraordinary re-election victory." He said Lula has stood up for workers and democracy. Congressman Ro Khanna argued that authoritarian leaders attack democracy because they cannot beat the will of the people. He said President Donald Trump must respect the results and not undermine Brazil's elections.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote on X that the people united will never be defeated. The press office of California Governor Gavin Newsom said the governor is proud to stand with Brazil. It said the two share a commitment to defending democracy, protecting the environment, and strengthening workers' rights.
