Senegalese authorities detained Amadou Sarang Diallo on Friday, according to civil society groups monitoring the case. The 27-year-old activist was taken into custody approximately 88 kilometers from the capital, Dakar, after posting a video to TikTok that criticized the presence of Israeli competitors at the ongoing Youth Olympic Games. The event, which began on 31 October and runs through 13 November, marks the first Olympic competition held on the African continent, drawing nearly 2,700 participants from around the globe.
The arrest followed Diallo’s assertion that Israeli citizens would never find peace in Senegal. Amidou Sidibe, coordinator of the civil society group Club Intermediaire, explained that police interpreted the phrase as a call for violence. Sidibe noted that in the Wolof language, the specific wording does not carry a dangerous connotation. Despite this linguistic nuance, officers searched Diallo’s residence and found no items indicating a threat, according to the group’s account.
The games have featured visible friction regarding the participation of the eleven Israeli athletes competing in eight disciplines, including boxing, athletics, judo, artistic gymnastics, fencing, and archery. Reports indicate that the Israeli delegation faced boos during the opening parade. This public reaction reflects a wider domestic debate about hosting a nation that is not universally recognized by all participating countries.
The National Alliance for the Palestinian Cause issued a statement on 2 November expressing deep concern over the detention. The organization emphasized that freedom of expression is a fundamental right in democratic societies. It argued that the peaceful articulation of political beliefs or activist commitments should not, on its own, justify the removal of an individual’s liberty. The alliance reaffirmed its commitment to respecting the laws and institutions of the Republic while advocating for Diallo’s release.
