Nevada voters chose a new path on Wednesday, electing Democrat Attorney General Aaron Ford to replace Republican incumbent Joe Lombardo. The result moves the state's executive office from red to blue.
Lombardo acknowledged the loss by calling Ford to congratulate him. In a public statement, the outgoing governor said serving the state has been the honor of his lifetime.
Community reactions were mixed. Jamie Lurtz expressed relief, noting that she thought Lombardo needed to step down. She described the weather as blue and sunny. Danny Worry said he loved the results but remained cautious about the future. He stated that the situation could not be any worse than it was under Lombardo.
Some voters pointed to a recent viral video of a traffic stop. In the footage, Lombardo appeared on police body camera. Kaj Sorenson said the clip made him feel the governor was acting above the law. Sorenson said he did not like that impression at all.
Ford plans to hold a rally on Wednesday following a long wait for polling places to close. In his election night remarks, he identified affordability and building more housing across the state as his main goals.
