Thomas Markle Jr has been designated a person of interest in a Philippine investigation into the possession of child sexual abuse material. The designation came on Thursday when Jonvic Remulla, the secretary for interior and local government, briefed reporters in Manila. Remulla indicated that authorities found evidence suggesting the son may have participated in the crime, though he is not yet a formal suspect.

The probe focuses on Thomas Markle Sr, the 82-year-old father of Meghan Markle, who faces claims of possessing digital files of underage children. Investigators recovered more than 7,500 photographs and one video file from the older Markle’s belongings. The media files depict children of Asian, Latin, and European descent, with some appearing to be as young as ten or eleven years old. Remulla called the collection the most deplorable display of impunity toward sexual exploitation he had ever seen.

The case originated in Cebu City, where the son initially discovered the images. Markle Jr alerted both local police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation after finding the files in his father’s property. He remains in Cebu City, a location Remulla confirmed during the press conference. Sky News has contacted Markle Jr for comment on his new status in the investigation.

Thomas Markle Sr returned to the United States in May and subsequently moved into a rehabilitation center in Florida. He has an estranged relationship with Meghan and continues to maintain that he did not possess the alleged images. The timing of his departure and subsequent care placement has become part of the public narrative surrounding the case.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have declined to issue a public statement on the current developments. Earlier this year, Meghan described herself as deeply distressed by the allegations. She revealed that she had been shown a letter sent to the Metropolitan Police seven years prior, which contained what she described as troubling and disturbing allegations. At that time, she said she received assurances that the claims were being actively investigated.

The investigation continues as authorities process the digital evidence. Remulla’s announcement adds a new layer to the high-profile case, which now involves both the father and his son. The next steps will depend on the analysis of the recovered files and the formalization of charges.
