Federal agents arrested Thomas Wayne Markle on Friday morning in Lakeland, Florida, on charges of possessing child pornography. The 82-year-old father of Meghan Markle was taken into custody by authorities near Tampa, according to two people familiar with the case who spoke to The Associated Press.

The federal complaint accuses Markle of possessing sexually explicit images of himself with minors. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. Bill Essayli, the first assistant U.S. attorney, described the charges as extremely serious. He stated that prosecutors would handle the case with the full weight of federal law.

The investigation began in October 2026. Officials received information from a person who discovered presumed child abuse material among Markle's belongings in the Philippines. That person identified the items as photos of sexual abuse.

FBI agents later searched two storage facilities in the Los Angeles area. Markle had rented these units since 2008. The agents found approximately 78 items, including slides, photographic negatives, and books containing the alleged material. The federal complaint notes that some images appear to show Markle with minors in various states of undress.

The discovery in the Philippines preceded the federal arrest. The Sun newspaper reported that Meghan Markle's half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., found a large collection of images while emptying their father's home in Cebu. Markle Jr. told the tabloid he found hundreds, if not thousands, of photos in boxes. He said he reported the findings to the Philippine police and contacted the FBI.

Meghan Markle, who has no relationship with her father, recently addressed the accusations. She described herself as deeply distressed by the news. She revealed that a letter with concerning accusations about Thomas Markle was sent to London police in 2018. "It contained concerning and disturbing accusations against my father, and I was assured they were being investigated," she said.

Markle Sr. is a retired television lighting and photography director. He did not attend Meghan and Prince Harry's 2018 wedding at Windsor Castle, a detail that drew significant media attention to their strained relationship. Earlier this year, Markle suffered a stroke in the Philippines. Doctors amputated his left leg, which required his return to the United States.
