Sixty cases of a new beer called Sibling Rivalry will be available starting in early November. The brew is a collaboration between Hundred Mile Brewing Co. in Tempe and Dragoon Brewing Co. in Tucson. It marks the third year the two breweries have produced a special beer for the annual Territorial Cup football game.

The Sun Devils and Wildcats will play on Nov. 28 in Tucson. That game will be the 100th meeting between the two schools for the trophy. The NCAA recognizes the Territorial Cup as the oldest college football rivalry trophy in the country, with origins dating back to 1899.

Sue Rigler, owner of Hundred Mile, and Tristan White, co-owner of Dragoon, lead the partnership. Rigler founded her brewery in 2022, placing it near her alma mater, Arizona State University. White co-founded Dragoon in 2012 and is a graduate of the University of Arizona. The two have a history of trading playful jabs about their respective schools.

The beer for this season is a West Coast Pilsner with an alcohol by volume of 5%. Head brewer Matt Underwood at Dragoon and head brewer Nick Macal at Hundred Mile developed the recipe. White described the goal as creating a drink that is approachable while retaining the hop profile associated with Dragoon.

“It’s a fresher take on the pilsner,” White said. “It’s easy drinking but has some hop character that will keep IPA heads happy.” Rigler noted that the style combines the hoppiness of a West Coast IPA with the light flavor of a pilsner.

The breweries take turns hosting the collaboration brew based on the location of the game. Last year, the game was in Tempe, so Rigler hosted. This year, the game is in Tucson, so Dragoon holds the hosting role. The beer will be sold at both taprooms in early November.

On game day, cans will be available for sale at the stadium. Additional cans will be stocked at bottle shops in the Phoenix Valley and Tucson. The limited production run emphasizes the collaborative and celebratory nature of the event rather than mass distribution.

Rigler approached White and Dragoon co-founder Eric Greene with the idea for the beer. She cited the long-standing tradition of drinking beer at football games as the inspiration. “It’s a rivalry. It’s football. People drink beer with football. Let’s have a little fun in the brewing industry with it,” Rigler said. Both breweries agreed to the partnership without hesitation.

The current season sees the Wildcats positioned near the top of the Big 12 conference, while the Sun Devils sit in the middle of the pack. Rigler expressed hope for an upset, noting that the essence of a rivalry often involves the underperforming team winning. White, who grew up in Glendale and married into an ASU family, finds the cross-pollination of fan bases interesting.

Both owners plan to attend the game with their staff. White said the teams remain friendly when the game is not in progress. “We can be friendly when the game’s not on,” White said. “We won’t be mean, but we’ll cheer for our team.” Rigler described the beer as neutral ground where fans from both sides gather.

Hundred Mile Brewing Co. is located at 690 N. Scottsdale Road, Unit A, in Tempe. Dragoon Brewing Co. is located at 1859 W. Grant Road, #111, in Tucson. The Sibling Rivalry beer represents a specific intersection of local business and college athletics history.
