A clash between local governance and property rights defines the week in Oxford, Connecticut. Voters head to the polls to rewrite the town’s operating rules while neighbors argue over how close a new structure can sit to a property line.
Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Quaker Farms School on Great Oak Road. Ballots include state and federal contests alongside a specific question on the 2026 town charter revision. Same-day registration is available at Town Hall, which is separate from the voting location.
Two days later, the Zoning Board of Appeals meets at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, in the Main Meeting Room of Town Hall. The panel will review a request for a detached garage at 17 Old Country Road. The owner seeks permission to extend the structure into a mandatory 25-foot setback. The legal notice cites driveway constraints and the absence of space for an emergency vehicle turnaround.
The application is available for public review at the town clerk’s office. This hearing determines whether the garage can break the standard distance rules that separate buildings from property boundaries.
Local government activity continues throughout the week. The Parks and Recreation Commission meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, to review the fiscal 2025-26 financial overview and capital expenditure requests. The Board of Fire Chiefs posts meeting materials for a session on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
Community services resume with a rescheduled hazardous waste collection. The regional event, delayed from Sept. 26, takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Ansonia Transfer Station. Oxford High School and the American Legion host a Veterans Day assembly in the high school gym on Wednesday, Nov. 11. The program includes a presentation of colors, student music, and remarks from veterans, followed by a light luncheon for military families.
