Jennings County Sheriff’s Office officers used a newly established drone unit on Saturday to locate a four-year-old boy who had wandered off in a rural area. The child, who is autistic, was found within minutes of the deployment, ending a search that could have otherwise taken much longer. This marks the third operational use of the aerial equipment by the department.

The sheriff’s office recently acquired three drones to enhance public safety measures. Department leaders reported that the technology has been in the county for approximately one month. Officers began utilizing the devices a few weeks prior to this incident. The previous two deployments involved a different missing persons case and the surveillance of a crime scene.

Det. Allen Ritchie noted that the technology drastically reduces search times. He stated that tasks requiring hours of physical walking can now be completed in a matter of minutes from an aerial perspective. Ritchie explained that the program is still in its early stages and that the drones offer versatile capabilities for various law enforcement needs.

Ritchie cited an example involving a potential threat at a residence. He said officers can now position a drone in the air to gather surveillance footage. This allows them to relay real-time information to personnel on the ground regarding activity around the house. The unit aims to expand its use of these tools for future operations.

The sheriff’s office said in a statement that investing in this technology helps the agency utilize resources more effectively. The department stated that the drones improve response capabilities and provide a higher level of service to citizens in Jennings County. The unit continues to integrate the new hardware into its daily operations.
